Relapse Prevention Therapy for Addiction
A practical plan for triggers, slips and the months after treatment.
What is Relapse Prevention Therapy?
Relapse Prevention Therapy helps you recognise early warning signs, manage high-risk situations and respond to a slip without giving up. It is built on the idea that relapse is a process, not a single moment.
How it helps in addiction
- Map personal triggers and warning signs
- Prepare responses for high-risk situations
- Plan what to do after a slip so it does not become a full relapse
- Build a healthy routine and support network
What a session looks like
You build a written, personal plan and revisit it at follow-up visits. Family members can be involved, with your consent.
Who it suits
- Anyone who has completed detox or reduced use
- People who have relapsed before
- Families who want to know how to support recovery

Frequently asked questions
Does a relapse mean treatment failed?
No. Relapse is common in long-term conditions and is a signal to adjust the plan, not a reason to give up.
How long does relapse prevention continue?
The risk is highest in the first months, so regular follow-up in that period matters. How long you need support depends on your situation.
Can family help?
Yes. With your consent, family members can learn the warning signs and how to respond.
