REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) for Addiction
Replace rigid, self-defeating beliefs with balanced ones.
What is REBT?
REBT looks at the rigid beliefs behind emotional distress, such as “I must be perfect” or “I can’t stand discomfort”. It teaches you to question these beliefs and replace them with flexible, realistic ones, so cravings and emotions feel more manageable.
How it helps in addiction
- Reduce guilt, shame and self-blame that fuel relapse
- Manage anger, anxiety and frustration without substances
- Build tolerance for discomfort and cravings
- Develop self-acceptance after setbacks
What a session looks like
Sessions are active and practical. You pick a situation that triggered distress or use, identify the belief behind it, dispute it with evidence and agree on a balanced alternative, with small tasks to test it in daily life.
Who it suits
- People who feel intense guilt, anger or shame
- Perfectionists and those who give up after a slip
- People who say they cannot cope without using

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CBT and REBT?
Both are structured and practical. CBT works broadly on thoughts and behaviours, while REBT puts special focus on disputing rigid, absolute beliefs and building self-acceptance.
Is REBT suitable for addiction?
Yes. It is used alongside other treatment to address guilt, anger and the beliefs that keep people stuck in use, and works best as part of a full plan.
Can REBT be combined with medicines?
Yes. Where a psychiatrist advises medicines, therapy can run alongside them.
