DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) for Addiction
Skills to handle intense emotions, urges and stress.
What is DBT?
DBT teaches skills for managing overwhelming emotions and impulsive behaviour. It balances acceptance of where you are with the push to change. Its core skills are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and relationship effectiveness.
How it helps in addiction
- Ride out intense urges without acting on them
- Calm strong emotions and mood swings
- Handle conflict and rebuild relationships
- Reduce impulsive and risky behaviour
What a session looks like
Sessions teach one skill at a time, practise it in the room and set practice tasks for the week. Because DBT builds on regular practice, steady attendance matters more than the total number of sessions.
Who it suits
- People whose emotions feel intense or hard to control
- Those with impulsive behaviour or repeated crises
- People who use substances to switch off feelings
