Relapse is common in addiction recovery, as in other long-term conditions. It is not a failure. It is a signal to adjust the plan. The earlier you notice warning signs, the easier it is to act.
Early warning signs
- Skipping follow-up visits or therapy
- Isolating from supportive people
- Poor sleep, high stress or low mood
- Romanticising past use or thinking “just once”
- Returning to old places and friends
- Stopping medicines without medical advice
Build your plan
- List your top five triggers.
- Write a response for each one.
- Name three people you can call.
- Plan your daily routine and sleep.
- Keep your follow-up dates.
- Decide in advance what to do after a slip: call for help and do not hide it.
If you slip
A slip is not the end. Stop, reach out the same day, review what triggered it and restart your plan. Waiting and hiding makes it harder.
