If you have tried to stop drinking, smoking or using drugs by willpower alone and failed, you are not weak. Cravings are driven by habits, triggers and thoughts that can be changed. That is what Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works on.
How CBT understands addiction
CBT is built on the idea that thoughts, feelings and actions influence each other. A stressful day leads to a thought (“I need a drink to cope”), a feeling (tension) and an action (drinking or smoking). CBT helps you break that chain.
What you do in CBT
- Map your triggers: people, places, moods and times
- Spot and test unhelpful thoughts
- Learn coping skills for cravings and stress
- Plan for high-risk situations
- Practise new habits between sessions
What the evidence says
CBT is one of the most studied psychological treatments for substance use and is widely used for alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drugs. It works best as part of a full plan, which may include medicines, family support and follow-up.
Is CBT right for me?
CBT suits people who are ready to work on specific goals and practise skills. If you are unsure, a motivational approach may be a better first step. Dr Shadaab will advise after an assessment.
