How to Quit Weed (Ganja): A Practical Guide to Stopping Cannabis

4 min read · By Dr Shadaab · Updated 23 Oct 2026

Many people say “weed isn’t addictive”, then find they cannot sleep, eat or relax without it. Cannabis (weed, ganja, charas, marijuana) can cause dependence, especially with daily use and when started young. If you want to stop, this guide is for you.

Signs that weed has become a problem

  • You use it daily, or cannot get through the day or sleep without it
  • You use more than planned, or tried to cut down and could not
  • Memory, motivation, studies or work are slipping
  • Money problems, secrecy or arguments with family are increasing
  • You feel irritable, anxious or restless when you stop
  • You spend a lot of time getting, using or recovering from it

What happens when you stop

Cannabis withdrawal is not dangerous the way alcohol withdrawal can be, but it is uncomfortable: irritability, anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, vivid dreams, reduced appetite and strong cravings. Symptoms usually begin within a few days, are worst in the first week and settle over a few weeks. Sleep often takes the longest to return.

A practical plan to quit

  1. Choose a start date and tell one person you trust.
  2. Remove it from your space: stash, papers, dealer contacts and apps that make buying easy.
  3. Change your routine for the times you usually use: evenings, after work, with certain friends.
  4. Protect your sleep: fixed bedtime, no screens in bed, no late caffeine, some daily exercise.
  5. Ride out cravings. They come in waves and pass in minutes. Walk, shower, eat or call someone.
  6. Plan for friends who use. Decide in advance what you will say.
  7. Get support if you slip or feel low. A slip is not the end.

Mental health warning signs

Heavy use, especially from a young age, can worsen anxiety and depression and, in some people, trigger paranoia or psychosis. If you hear or see things that are not there, feel intensely suspicious, or have thoughts of harming yourself, see a doctor urgently. Tele-MANAS: 14416.
